This and That

Another month has flown by and no articles from the membership so here I am winging it! There has been a lot going on so I’m going to try to hit a little on everything and hope it provides you with something new.

HSTA Bike Week Lunch Ride

I know from the email list traffic that there were a large number of HSTA folks in from out of town. They even managed to spur the resurrection of the traditional Bike Week Lunch Ride. We weren’t going to do it due to being squeezed out of our assembly point at Daytona BMW by all the vendors. As anyone who has attended Bike Week knows, it gets very difficult to move anywhere in Daytona and assembling a number of bikes and riders for the lunch was deemed too difficult. But that didn’t deter the urge of the many HSTA members from out of state who still wanted to meet up for lunch so the plan became—meet up anywhere with anyone you like and the event would be the lunch. That worked out pretty well as the Blackwater Inn was just about full up with HSTA Bike Week attendees. Henry Custer and I rode over from Tampa together, blazing new routes along the way.

When we arrived at the Blackwater Inn, there were at least 20 bikes there already with more still to arrive. It was great to see folks who I only knew by name and to enjoy a nice lunch and then some tire kicking afterwards. My Laptop/GPS setup got a good bit of attention.

All too soon, everyone was on their way back home or to Daytona.
Ah, but then there was the Bike Week Dinner!

As usual, a lot of ST’s, but VFR’s were prominent as well
LOVE that custom Yellow colored ST!

 Bike Week Dinner
Got to see many of the same folks at the dinner, along with several more who hadn’t made it to the lunch ride. Once again, Phil’s pick of the establishment was great as they served up an outstanding buffet to satisfy the hungriest appetite or the most discriminating palate. The dinner was a few minutes late starting, but no one seemed to mind much. Phil opened with a short talk and even let
attending HSTA President Fred Ziglar speak for a few minutes. Then everyone made their passes at the buffet. Another good time was had by all, and all too soon we had to head for home.

Bike Week News
Having not spent any real time over there, I only know what I’ve read or heard… The safety record was not great with 10-13 deaths depending on where you draw the line of Daytona influence, though it was better than the bike week two years ago. Of course, any deaths are one too many, it seems that too many were somewhat preventable. According to the reports I read, two of the 10 local fatalities were wearing helmets. Even more telling were the stupid actions that some were also engaged in such as driving on the lines between two moving rows of vehicles at over the speed limit… Stupid + Stupid = begging for trouble. We witnessed much more of this activity on the trip back to Tampa, after dark, with bikes whipping down both sides and the middle of traffic lanes. The real story is that there weren’t MORE fatalities.

I heard the races were excellent. Gonna have to make it over one day to catch some of that action. Oh, and speaking of action, I heard there was a HOT demo of the Yamaha FJR 1300 which is now slated for import into the US! While I am a die hard ST fan, I am expecting the price to be quite a bit higher than the FJR and now I hear that the ST may require Premium fuel to boot. I sure hope not ‘cause if that’s so, it’ll be the deal breaker for my pocketbook… Guess I may have to stick with my trusty ‘91 ST for a few hundred thousand miles.

Membership News
In case you’re not on the email list (and many of you aren’t!) or otherwise haven’t heard, Bill Robinson is on the mend after a quite unexpected quadruple bypass heart surgery. I understand he’s already driving a car and it won’t be too long before he can pilot his motorcycle again too. We wish him the best and speediest recovery! Oh, and another tidbit of info on the membership is that HSTA Founder and past President, Dana Sawyer, has sold his VFR800 to Florida HSTA member John Anderson! Dana stated that he’s not planning on replacing the machine in the near future, rather he’s going to focus his attention on traveling with the family. So, though he won’t be actively riding with us, I am sure all will join me in wishing him the very best and he’ll always be a fellow rider in our hearts. Congrats to John Anderson on his new ride too!

Well, that’s about all I have at the moment. I hate to leave any empty space in the newsletter, so to finish off, here’s a picture of some of the movers and shakers of the HSTA at the Bike Week Dinner. I look forward to seeing you at one or more of the upcoming HSTA rides.

‘Till then—Let’s Go Ride

Ramblin' Around

Submitted by: Phil Ridgdill

Daytona has come and gone. You often hear this, wait till Daytona, we’ll see all the new stuff, when the time arrives you’ve already read about everything so there really isn’t any big surprises. I had this thought that Honda would show up with the new ST1300 and give Demos on it, nice thought but no cigar. It did look very good up there on that spinning pedestal. I wonder why they didn’t have it down on the ground with most of the other bikes, I would have liked to sit on it, just to see how it fit. Score one for Yamaha, are you listening Honda. I have a feeling that the people at Honda USA had a good look at the Yamaha FJR1300 and may have been very interested in the price, I heard $11500.00 for the Yamaha. Anybody hear any different? $11500.00 sure got my attention, that’s a lot of Motorcycle for the price. I feel quite sure that a lot of potential buyers watched very closely as Randy Mamola put the FJR1300 through its paces on Sunday morning. I’m the proud owner of a 1991 ST1100 with 75000 miles on the clock and I was considering replacing my ST1100 with the ST1300. I certainly hope the ST1300 is priced competitively.

I hope all of you got to see the 600cc race on Friday, to me that seems to be the best road race of the week. Very close racing until Mr. Yates took control with a 1 ½ laps to go, talk about sand bagging. The 200 miler on Sunday was interesting for a short period. After Roberts cooked his rear tire the race was Nicky Hayden all the way. It would be nice if we had an FIM World SuperBike track on the East Coast. Daytona would be the perfect place but Daytona International Speedway would never qualify without major reconstruction. A World Championship race in Daytona, be it GP or WSB, something we haven’t had here in a long time. Rossi up against KR.JR, on an American track, I think that would bring the road racing fans out. Oh well, when your dreaming why not dream big.

I’m beginning to adapt to the new VFR Interceptor. Its got 1400 miles on it now but it’s still tight. I’ve had a few runs with a 99 VFR800 and starting from 5000 rpm (6th gear) shutting down at 7000 rpm, the 99 model will pull away quickly. I’m a little reluctant to run it too high in the scale just yet. We’ve done the same test with my 96VFR750 and the 750 stays very close to the 99VFR800. When I get a few more miles on the 02 Model, we’ll try it with the Interceptor in the power band, 7000 rpm an up. Comfort wise I’m beginning to lean toward a set of Heli Bars. I had a go on the VFR800 with Heli Bars and it was very comfortable. By next month I’ll have a few more miles on it and we’ll see how it goes then. By the way, here is another one for Honda, where are the bags you promised for the new Interceptor??????

On April 20th we will have a Lunch Ride to Trenton FL, The Old Boarding House restaurant. I’ve invited the North Florida BMW Club to join us on this ride. This will give you a chance to kick tires and tell a few with the BMW riders. The NFL BMW Club is good group people and quite large (80 to 90 members) and I feel quite sure they will be there in numbers. The food is good at the boarding house and quite reasonable, if you didn’t make it to Trenton the last time we were there, make it a point to come this time. Mark it on your calendar APRIL 20th, lunch at 1200 noon.

Join us at “Ye Olde Boarding House” for a great all you can eat buffet bargain lunch and meet up with HSTA and non-HSTA members alike. ¨ Huck's Road & Track Rally (Formerly Peter's Road & Track Rally) - May 3-5 - Gassville, Arkansas - You may have heard or read that this event was cancelled, but that information is not correct. Thanks to West Tenn. State Director Keith Huckabey, the former Peter’s Road & Track Rally is resurrected and will run as originally scheduled on the weekend of May 3-5. The whole hotel is reserved for the HSTA and with room rates of $46.50 (tax included!) it’s a bargain not to be missed. This is an HSTA members only event.

¨ Helen 2002 - May 3-5 - Helen, Georgia - Here’s a great southeast rally that ’s been a traditional favorite of many a Florida HSTA member. This year, sponsorship has changed over to our new Southeast Regional Director, Doug Pippin. There'll be a few changes this year with a Friday afternoon/evening weenie roast for participants and a sit-down dinner Saturday night all
included in the registration fee. For more information contact: Doug Pippin - 828-684-8488 or ldpippin5@bellsouth.net

EASTOC 2002 - May 10-12 - Canton, NC - This is an ST Owners Club sponsored event. Located in the heart of the NC Mountains, the Blue-Ridge Cycle Campground offers the ideal base for this annual STOC Event. The Blue Ridge Cycle Camp Ground is on highway 276 in the heart of the North Carolina Mountains. Looking at a map, it is below Waynesville, NC and above Brevard, NC on 276 about 4-5 miles North of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The camp ground has 16 small cabins, some with 2 twin beds and some with a queen bed. The cabins are a place to sleep only (now heated), but there are nice bathroom facilities there. There are two rooms in a small trailer with facilities and a queen sized bed. There is plenty of tent space. They have breakfaST and dinner on sight (home cooking at its beST).
