Florida Rides!
Submitted By: Bill Royal

While our northern brethren continue to suffer through one of the worst winters on record, we here in Florida have already enjoyed 3 great months of riding in 2003. First, there was the Bike Week Lunch Ride to the Blackwater Inn. This event is primarily a ride for the gang that comes in for Bike Week, and being held on a Thursday makes it a bit unusual . Perhaps that’s why it was only Henry Custer and myself heading out on an absolutely stunning day for a ride. We rode different routes to and from the Blackwater Inn and covered some 310 miles of Florida’s best secondary roads in the process.

Bike Week Lunch Ride
to Blackwater Inn, Astor, FL

Meanwhile, we had a great turnout at the lunch. Unfortunately, I managed to somehow mis-place the sign-in sheets so I do not have the exact count or the names of everyone, but there were in excess of 30, many of which were HSTA members from out of state. Not everyone hung out for the group picture either so sorry for those we missed!

Okechobee Lunch Ride
Everyone got wet on the way there, but all still enjoyed the day!

Then there was the “South” lunch ride. 17 riders braved the 30% chance of rain forecasts, as well as darkening skies towards central Florida to make the lunch in Okeechobee. I led a group of 8 riders over from Sun City Center (HSTA members myself, and Henry Custer, and non-members Jack & Jane Stafford, Tom & Joann Predmore, and Ken Hitchins), and the Melbourne/Orlando gang (Members Terry Brown, Mark Hanke, Russ Sage, Larry Fitch and Alex Nelson along with non-members Tom Blake, Lynn Yawn, Danny Batchelder, Steve Mate and Rich Douds) showed up in force as well. It was particularly nice to see a long time member who hadn’t made any rides of late, Paul VanSteelant—or “Van” as he like to be called showed up from Boynton Beach on his immaculate ‘82 CB900F. And a prospective female member from Jupiter—Sandra Ingram—also made the ride over on her Nighthawk 750 to round out the bunch. Everyone reported getting wet on the way in, but nobody was complaining. Our group hit about 30 minutes of very heavy rain as we came through Sebring and Lorida. Of course, we did stop for those with rain gear to don it, with me being the only rider who had chanced it by not bringing any along! So, yes, I was a bit damp as we ate lunch, but the ride home was all dry and by the time we arrived back home I had completely dried out.

So, that makes about 3500 miles for me in 2003 so far. Hope you're all getting in all the miles with smiles you can stand.

Rain-Rain-Rain, That seem to be the story of Bike Week in Daytona for 2003. I felt sorry for all of the people, camp grounds flooded, windy and cold, spend your vacation time for this, what a black cloud. Having said that, if you went for the races, when the weather cooperated, racing was fantastic. Unfortunately for some, that was only a few days including the Monday 200 mile Race, for the Race fan, couldn’t ask for a better race.

A big thanks to all the members and visitors who made the Lunch on Thursday 6 March in Astor Park. Seems like we have a lot of visitors to our lunch rides, which is a good thing. Visitors are always welcome but after seeing these people at 2 or 3 of our events, it looks like they are enjoying our lunch rides/socials, I wonder why they return to these rides/lunches. It appears like they don’t want to support our club by joining the organization but they will come to our event, whatever it is. Guests and Visitors are welcome but I would hope that they keep it in mind these Rides/Lunches/ Socials are organized for the members, if they like what we are doing, they should join and support the club. If you happen to be a visitor to our web site, read this article and would like to have an application to join the Honda Sport Touring Association, contact me at rfoxrdr@earthlink.net or Bill Royal at wgr@sprynet.com, give us your name, address, tel # and email address, we will post you an application as soon as possible.

Next year during Bike Week, we are planning a Thursday Ride that will be an all day ride, lunch destination will be other than the Blackwater Inn in Astor Park. After talking to some of our Out of State Members I got the impression they would be up for ride. A meeting place in Daytona/Ormond Beach will be sorted out and the ride will start from that point.

The Sat Nite Dinner on 8 March was well attended, 52 people. This is a bit off considering we had 66 last year. This year I wanted to add a speaker for dinner and invited Jon Seidel from American Honda to be our speaker. I’d like to thank Jon for taking the time to do this, all the American Honda People are very busy during Bike Week, so a big thanks to Jon Seidel. We all enjoyed what he had to say about Honda and of course there was a little question and answer session that brought out some interesting facts. Also, thanks Norm & Maggie Nelson, Owners of BMW Motorcycles of Daytona Beach, for the nice display of the new BMW F650GS & BMW R1150R. Norm & Maggie are HSTA members and have a fantastic Motorcycle Dealership, if you’re in Daytona and want to have a look at the BMWs or check out all the neat Motorcycle gear, visit their shop, you’ll be impressed. Thanks to Kirt Lynch owner of Atlantic Moto Sport of Jacksonville FL. for the display of the sweet looking Moto Guzzi’s. Kirt is also a member of the HSTA and his Dealership carries Moto Guzzi, GasGas & MZ motorcycles and Kirt carries all the latest in Motocross gear. If you’re interested in a Guzzi you can check out his shop at www.Atlanticmotosport.com (904 247 1622). Kirt will be happy to hear from you, just mention you are an HSTA member. Thanks to Frank Chase for allowing us to display his new Honda VFR VTEC, Hondas latest in their long series of V Four motorcycles and this one is a beauty, I know because I have one. Last but not least, thanks to Dave Gorham for displaying his brand new BMW K1200GT. Knowing Dave, by now this motorcycle is broken in and running quick. All of these motorcycles were in the dinning room for everyone to have a close look.

We are in the process of establishing a new FL HSTA web site that should come on line in late April. This web site will be larger, more information, photographs, Advertisements, etc. If you have some photographs, digital please, that you’d like to see in the newsletter, please forward them to wgr@spynet.com & rfoxrdr@earthlink.net . If you’d like to write an article about your rides/motorcycle/tips, we will have room in this new web site. Hopefully this new site will help promote our membership in Florida.

On April 20 2002 we had our monthly lunch ride to Trenton FL. I invited the BME NEF club to join us on that ride and it was quite successful. This year on Sat April 26 2003 we will have our monthly lunch ride to The Old Boarding House Restaurant, Trenton FL. Once again I have invited the BMW NEF club to join us on this ride. The food is good here, reasonable price and Trenton is easy to locate. This is one you don’t want to miss, mark the date on your calendar.

A few years back I put on a non-sanction weekend event in St. Augustine FL. Due to lack of participation, I stopped after the 2nd year. Recently I’ve been asked are we considering any weekend events. So, I’ll put this out to the membership, would you like to have a weekend event in FL? If so, what area would you like to have it? If we get enough interest, we’ll do it. Contact me if you’re interested.

Helmet Review
Submitted By: Bill Royal

I recently have been looking around for a replacement helmet for my now 4 year old HJC full-face. Although it has served me well, the HJC fit was always quite constricting in the face, particularly at the lips. In addition to getting a bit uncomfortable on longer trips, this precluded any ability to use a bladder drinking device which I really wanted to use. Also, with the amount of wear it gets here in the hot Florida summers, it needs washing which is problematic at best. With a non-removable liner it is difficult to get this helmet really fresh and one needs to plan well in advance so that it has time to dry out after you do wash it. So there you have two of my requirements in a new helmet—a removable, washable liner and better face room. Also, since I often use a portable MP3 player and/or GPS Voice navigation, I also needed room for helmet speakers.

Now, I have been attracted to the new flip-up helmets and have voraciously read all reviews for some months now. Most got good marks, but the HJC Symax and the Nolan S100 were both on my must try list. The opportunity to do so came when I went over to Daytona for the Bike Week Dinner. Arriving earlier in the day Eve and I were able to make it into the Helmet Shop where I could try on the brands and sizes I was interested in.

My first disappointment came with the Nolans (I tried on three different models). Fit was not very good at all, and most of them required two hands to open. One model allowed one handed opening, but only the left hand. Ugh! I then tried on a couple of the HJC’s and again the fit was problematic. Hmmm… Maybe it’s my fat head! ;-)

At this point I was getting frustrated, but then a Helmet Shop sales person came by and asked me how I was doing. I explained what I was looking for and my fit problems and he immediately had a suggestion. He led me over to a rack of Vega helmets. Now, I know Vega is a low priced brand, but I have owned their half-helmets in the past and had been generally happy with them. The salesman told me that this was a brand new model for Vega and in particular he felt the fit was going to be to my liking. Was he ever right!. Although even this helmet does get very close to my lower chin when closed, the way it’s constructed leaves ample room around my mouth area. Moreover, there is an integrated breath deflector and front vent system that not only leaves me good room there but also you can actually tell when the vent is open because it flows air so well. Because of this, visor fogging is far reduced from any other full face helmet I have ever used.

Now for the really good stuff! It’s got a removable, machine-washable liner. One small drawback is that the speaker pockets are a part of that liner so the speakers must be removed at wash time, but that’s a very minor nit. Where the speaker pockets are, there is ample room in the helmet so no material at all need be removed to make room for the speakers and although they aren’t squeezing your ears, they are locatable so that a good sound volume is achievable. The helmet uses a single button release, located dead center in the front and slightly inside the helmet so it’s not going to get accidentally opened and is operable by either hand. It comes with a clear shield, which is easily changed with no tools and it has an excellent fit and seal which reduces wind noise. Despite the flip up feature, this helmet is actually a little quieter than my HJC solid full face. Oh, and here’s the best part—price for the helmet was just $129. What a bargain. Oh, and one more thing - replacement shields are only $14 for standard clear or smoke or $19 for a mirrored and they come with additional replacement hardware for the ratchet/shield release mechanism (maybe they know something I don’t yet, but time will tell) and a mirrored shield for my HJC is $39.

Though I hadn’t planned on actually purchasing that day, I did walk out with a new flip-front full face helmet that had every single feature I was looking for and for less than $150. I wouldn’t have thought it possible in this day and age. It is DOT certified, though not SNELL (still way better than no helmet at all).

So, if you’re in the market for a flip-up be sure to check out the Vega line. I believe the model name is “Summit– XPV”
